Price increase: Refueling with diesel becomes more expensive again

After fuel prices in Austria have recently recovered, there is now the threat of another jump in the cost of diesel. This is because imports from Germany are becoming scarce, as Germany itself imports large quantities from Russia.

Fuel prices already rose massively with the start of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine – but such a high-cost jump is not currently expected.
Although Austria no longer buys petroleum products directly from Russia, the second part of the EU embargo could indirectly impact Austria. “Austria imports about 60 percent of the Austrian diesel demand. Of this amount, about 60 percent comes from Germany,” said Hedwig Doloszeski, managing director of the Association of the Petroleum Industry in the Chamber of Commerce, on Friday in the Ö1 “Morgenjournal.”

Price increase not yet assessable

Because Germany has produced a lot of diesel from Russian oil and also purchased diesel from Russia, the supply of diesel in Austria could also decrease.

Massive shortages are not expected, but “if there is too much demand and the supply is so low, higher prices may result,” Doloszeski explained. However, it is impossible to estimate how much prices could rise, Doloszeski said.
